How Viagra Works?

Mechanism of action of Viagra - How Viagra Works?

When a man is aroused, nerve signals are sent from a brain to the penis. This nerve signals releases chemicals (cGMP), which in turn relaxes muscle in the penis. When these muscles relax, large amount of blood enters the penis, causing an erection. In a man with Erectile dysfunction, another chemical called Phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE 5) breaks down the the chemical used to relax the muscles (cGMP) and thus does not allow the blood to flow to penis and in turn cannot maintain an erection.

So if any how the PDE 5 chemical is inhibited the level of chemical cGMP would be increased and thus muscle relaxation in penis would be normal and thus more blood will flow to penis and a man could maintain an erection for longer period. This is where Viagra or Sildenafil Citrate comes into the picture.

Viagra (Sildenafil) works by blocking PDE 5. When PDE 5 is blocked the level of cGMP chemical is increased which causes more blood flow to penis and thus allows man to maintain erection for longer period.

One thing has to be very clear that, Viagra does not work without sexual stimulation or excitement. The chemicals that causes an erection has to be released into the penis and they are released only when a man is sexually aroused. Viagra does not help in releasing this chemicals it only helps in maintaining this chemicals for longer period.

Viagra once taken orally its effects begins within 15 to 30 minutes and lasts at least for 4 hours.

Viagra (Sildenafil Citrate)

What is Viagra (Sildenafil)?

Viagra or Sildenafil Citrate is a drug used for men to treat erectile dysfunction or Impotence. It is developed and brought to the market by Pharmaceutical company called Pfizer. It is available since 1998 and is the prime treatment for erectile dysfunction or impotence. Its competitors are Cialis and Levitra.

Looking into the history of Viagra in 1986 Pfizer found that by inhibiting phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE 5) there can be many benefits for people suffering from inadequate blood supplies to the heart or angina. In 1989, they found that Sildenafil citrate powerfully inhibited PDE 5. Thus sildenafil was found to be used for inhibiting PDE 5 and thus help coronary arteries to  dilate and ease angina symptoms and avoid platelets to avoid sticking to the surface of damaged arteries where they might even trigger heart attacks.

However with the use of Sildenafil in males some unusual finding were reported, many reported a marked increase in getting erections.

Thus after carrying our further studies and testing on men with erectile dysfunction, it was proved that a single dose of Sildenafil (Viagra) could prmote erections in men who previously had problems of getting erections.

Finally in March 1998, Viagra was introduced as the first oral medication for the treatment of erectily dysfunction or impotence.

In period 1999-2001, the sales of Viagra exceeded the milestone of $1 Billion.

Precautions for Swine Flu in Pregnancy

Young age people who are usually observed in groups and those who are not good at immunity are most vulnerable to swine flu virus. Yes, Pregnant women are most susceptible to swine flu infections as their immune system in naturally suppressed in pregnancy. The evidence that influenza can be more severe in pregnant women is available from observations during previous pandemics and from studies among pregnant women who had seasonal influenza.

Most pregnant women will have similar symptoms as most of the people have during swine flu. However, pregnant women have an increased risk of complications fron any type of flu, because of their suppressed immune system. Some possible complications are pneumonia, difficulty breathing and dehydration more likely to happen in second or third month. There is however small chance that such complications may lead to premature birth or miscarriage.

Some precautions for swine flu during pregnancy:
  • Avoid unnecessary travel
  • Minimize contacts with sick individuals.
  • Avoid crowds where ever possible
  • Follow general hygiene advice, read general precautions for swine flu.
  • Always be in contact with doctor if you have any of the symptoms of swine flu or even if any of your family member has swine flu.
  • One should go on antiviral drugs only if doctor prescribes.
Pregnant women with influenza or H1N1 should receive empiric antiviral treatment. The drug of choice for treatment of pregnant women is oseltamivir i.e. Tamiflu. Treatment should ideally not be delayed. It should be initiated as soon as possible after the onset of influenza symptoms. It would be of greatest benefit if it is started within 48 hours of onset. Also this does not mean each and every women during pregnancy should immediately start taking Tamiflu if found symptoms of virus. But they should immediately contact doctor consult with them and they will surely prescribe Tamiflu if you have any kind of influenza symptoms. Thus better is to reach to doctor before 24 hours of onset of symptoms and start treatment Tamiflu before 48 hours if prescribed by doctor.

Infants are thought to be at higher risk for severe illness from novel influenza A (H1N1) infection as well and very little is known about prevention of novel H1N1 flu infection in infants. Infants who are not breastfeeding are more vulnerable to infection than infants who are breastfeeding. Women who are not ill with influenza should be encouraged to initiate breastfeeding early and feed frequently. Avoid unnecessary supplementation, so infant can receive as much maternal antibodies as possible.

If possible only adults who are not sick should care of infants, including providing feedings. The risk of H1N1 transmission through breast milk is unknown, however the risk of virus crossing into breast milk is also probably rare.

Parents and caretakers should take some precautions to avoid spread of virus.
  • Follow general hygiene advice and cough etiquette all the time.
  • Keep infant away from persons who are ill
  • Keep infant away from crowded areas as well
  • Avoid or limit sharing of toys that have been in infant's mouths. If possible wash thoroughly with soap and water any items before the use for infant if they have to be in their mouths.
